Throughout the 2016 season, there has been much to celebrate on and off of the court.

Starting with events on the court, Rubislaw has performed very strongly in the North-East Adult summer leagues. On the men’s side the A team finished in 4th place and the B team in 5th in the first division, the C team were 5th in the second division and the D team won the third division. It was very encouraging, in particular, to see many of the junior players making inroads to the teams and contributing towards this success. Next year there will be two teams in the first division and two in the second. The ladies have also enjoyed a very strong season. The A team finished in a solid 5th place in the first division. The B team finished in second position in division 2, securing promotion to the first division. A special shout out to Sally Peacock, who was statistically the best player in the league! The C team also secured promotion after finishing second in division 3. Additionally, the men’s national league team finished in third place of the 2nd division scoring wins over Falkirk and Stirling University-excellent performances from Martin Harbord and Darren should be noted and also to the commitment of David Stead who participated in all matches (and helped to win the decisive match vs Stirling). I would like to thank all of the team captains for their organisation during the year-your hard work is very much appreciated!

This year Rubislaw has also played host to the SUBC doubles events sponsored by Colin Burney and the North East Confined event run by David Stead. These events were very well supported by players from all over Aberdeen and the North East.

Perhaps the most memorable day of the season was the Club’s Finals Day on Saturday 3rd September. This was by far the most well attended and enjoyed Finals Day in recent years. It was fantastic to have all of the Junior Finals being played alongside the adult events for the first time which, generated a great buzz around Rubislaw. A big thank you to Darren and Stuart Adams for running the junior tournament and congratulations to all of the winners and finalists in all events! A shout out should also go to junior members Angus Blackwood, Logan and Autumn Train, who were wonderful ball kids for the Men’s Singles final. To follow a great finals’ day, we celebrated the usual end of season prize giving at Mannofield Squash Club on 1st October. There was an excellent turnout and it was brilliant to see so many families there. Hopefully all in attendance had a great time and all winners have found a home to proudly display their new trophies!

It has been a very busy year in terms of social events-in February 30 members went to Sunset Boulevard to play bowling, enjoy a surprisingly tasty meal. The highlight of the evening was certainly enjoying a spin on the dodgems! Definitely the funniest few minutes of the season! This event will need to be repeated in 2017 year! Furthermore, there was the usual Quiz night expertly hosted by our very own Scott Middleton. There was a decent turnout to this event and a big thank you to Scott, who always puts on such a good show! We also had a great Opening Day to the season in April with many members down to enjoy the spring sunshine, social tennis and the Committee’s tasty traybakes (especially the key lime pie I heard.) Finally, there was a Pizza Night and a very well attended Summer BBQ-again it was fantastic to see so many families at the club!

In other news, work has very recently been undertaken at the club to create a new patio and seating area to the side of the clubhouse. We hope this will add positively to the appearance of the club and can be enjoyed during the summer months.
