Finals Day of the Club Championships was held on Saturday 31 August 2013. The courts were bathed in warm sunshine as the Handicap Mixed Doubles final got underway at noon. In a well-contested match, Neil Strachan and Sarah Fraser won 6-5 6-3 against Dave Lindsay and Sheila Williams. With the arrival of the singles finalists, and refreshments (courtesy of Rae and Eleanor - thanks!), spectators began to appear and settled down to enjoy the blue riband events. After a decade of disappointment, club coach Darren Nicol took his first club singles title, winning 6-4 6-3 against Raymond Barclay who last won the event just as Darren was beginning his quest. Unusually, all the seeds had fallen in the women's singles and the final was contested by two qualifiers. Sarah Fraser showed no nerves and won her first club singles title, 6-4 6-2 against Eleanor Middleton. After a brief delay for a passing shower and the serving of refreshments, the men's and women's doubles finals began. Raymond Barclay and Jonny Gordon played a solid match to beat father and son pairing, David and Samuel Stead, 6-1 6-2. Finishing at the same time, the women's doubles was won by Sheila Williams and Carol Wilson, who beat Eleanor Middleton and Anne Shipley by 6-4 6-3. As the sushi and sandwiches and giant cup cakes were fast disappearing, the day was rounded off by the Mixed Doubles. Always a fun event to play, and very enjoyable to watch in the late afternoon sunshine, it was won in fine style by Darren Nicol and Fiona Hamilton, 6-4 6-0, against Raymond Barclay and Sheila Williams who were probably feeling the effects of having both played in two other finals. Congratulations to all the players and thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a successful day!
